Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GDAAS) is an agricultural research institution directly regulated by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province. GDAAS was established in1960 and the predecessor of GDAAS was a rice experimental station of Sun Yat-sen University led by Prof. Ying Ding, a famous agronomist and South China Institute of Agricultural Sciences founded in 1956. The incumbent president of GDAAS is Dr. Zongyong Jiang. After more than 80 years, GDAAS has developed into a famous provincial agricultural research institution in China with strong comprehensive research strength. According to the nationwide evaluation (executed by the Ministry of Agriculture of PRC) of comprehensive research strength from more than 1000 agricultural research institutes, 8 institutes under the academy ranked within top 50, and 3 institutes under the academy within top 10.
Organization and Staffs
There are 13 research institutes under GDAAS: Rice Research Institute, Crops Research Institute, Fruit Tree Research Institute, Vegetable Research Institute, Floriculture Research Institute, Sericulture and Farm Produce Processing Research Institute, Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute, Tea Research Institute, Plant Protection Research Institute, Institute of Soil and Fertilizer Science, Institute of Animal Science, Institute of Veterinary Medicine, and Sci-tech Information Institute. The main mission of GDAAS is to carry out research and extension of agricultural science and techniques. At the end of 2008, GDAAS employed 1,832 staffs, 349 of which are senior scientists, the others are research assistants technicians and officials. In 2008, GDAAS gained 15 scientist positions in National Modern Agricultural Industry Technical System and 7 stationmasters of comprehensive experimental station.
Research Facilities
By the end of 2008, 4 National Germplasm Nurseries on wild rice、sweet potato、banana and lychee、 South China Branch of National Tea Plant Germplasm Resources and Guangdong Tea Plant Germplasm Resources Bank had been established in GDAAS. And more than 30,000 germplasm resources were preserved in GDAAS, which is the biggest agricultural biological germplasm gene bank in South China. GDAAS has 3 Key Open Labs of Ministry of Agriculture of PRC、3 Open Labs and 10 Key Labs of Guangdong.:
